standard 6: engage in professional learning
Gaining and using COnstructive feedback
Focus area 6.3.1 - Seek and apply constructive feedback from supervisors and teachers to improve teaching practices
The use of feedback, is not only important for us as teachers to give students, but for us as teachers to be given from supervisors and/or mentors.
Throughout both of my university practicums, I was able to gain feedback from both my supervising teachers, and my tertiary supervisors who had all experienced teaching in schools - at various levels, and that are at different stages of their teaching career. Whilst gaining this constructive feedback from teachers and supervisors, I was able to use the feedback to improve and change lessons that followed it, ensuring I was taking into account their advice on teaching specific students, and strategies to further explain concepts which may not have been addressed accordingly.
Below is a tertiary supervisor comment from my second university professional experience, and a supervising teacher comment from my first university professional experience. Throughout these comments, it is evident that I have sought and applied constructive feedback. Both sets of comments, demonstrate the strengths and weaknesses of my teaching, and illustrates ways in which I am able to improve, along with how I have thought about and used previous feedback to improve my teaching practices (Giving Feedback, 2015).
